Essay
After reading the article « ‘This is supposed to be a rich country’:
volunteers on the reality of food bank Britain» (https://www.theguardian.com/society/2018/dec/19/this-is-supposed-to-be-a-rich-country-volunteers-on-the-reality-of-food-bank-britain) which is devoted to such an acute social problem as
food poverty, I decided to think it over. Since middle class runs in our
society, well-off people mostly do not consider about those who are not able to
provide themselves. There are many different reasons why some citizens are on the
breadline, and not all of them are depend on the person. That is why some
sympathetic to other’s misery people organize food banks.
On the one hand, someone may say this idea is not that good, as it
seems. As people that come to food bank are just lazy and do not want to change
their life. It is enough for them to take free food and waste little amount of
money on alcohol or drugs. Someone may say this way of life is completely fault
of these people. Many times I have seen a pour man or woman asking for money
for surgery, but people were just passing by thinking it is not true.
On the other hand, food bank is a kind of hope that our society can be
saved from neglectful persons, and there are that ones who are not indifferent
to its destiny. As the saying goes, if you want to change the word, start with
yourself. And the men and women from the article do it. They help
poverty-stricken people to find hope in the world. As they come to the food
bank not being able to afford even some ordinary life necessities. People who
organize it say: «If you can do something to help, why wouldn’t you?». They are
joyful to put a smile on someone else’s face without any benefit. For instance,
Alison Riggott claims: «I’ve been surprised by how open people are. Even if
their stories are sad, it makes me feel more connected», and it shows how
important support is in our society. Moreover, Alison is convinced that «if you
are in food poverty, you still have preferences». That is why it is important
to diversify the menu as much as it is possible. For example, one woman is
trying to get people to donate dried herbs and spices so they can be added to
stews.
Frankly speaking, I admire the generosity of these people and their
moral values. I am sure it is important to help each other as good goes round. This
problem must not stay without attention nowadays, and Eileen Whitehorn got a
right point there: «I never expected in the 21st century that I would be
working in a food bank».
